Support Our Troops: Chrysler, Ram Truck Brand To Send One Million "Letters for Lyrics" to U.S. Soldiers

Starting in May, Zac Brown Band and the Ram Truck Brand will kick off the "Letters for Lyrics" national campaign with a target of sending one million letters to U.S. soldiers stationed across the world. Participants who write a letter to a U.S. soldier will receive a special compilation CD entitled, "Breaking Southern Ground," while supplies last.

The nonprofit organization, Soldier's Angels, will deliver the letters on behalf of the Zac Brown Band and the Ram Truck Brand. Soldier's Angels is a volunteer-based organization known for providing aid and comfort to the men and women of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, along with veterans and their families.

Saving Fuel With a New Purpose

What if a pilot using single-engine taxi not only saved fuel, but allowed a wounded soldier to reunite with his family at home? Or if the process of connecting ground power and pre-conditioned air helped a Vietnam vet arrive on time for his regular therapy treatment? A partnership between Fuel Smart and American's Veterans support team offers employees throughout the company the ability to make these and other moments possible for those who have served or currently serve in the U.S. armed forces. A portion of Fuel Smart savings generated by employees will be donated to help Veterans in need.

American announced today it will provide a portion of fuel savings generated by employees to Mercy Medical Airlift, an established not-for-profit organization that helps active military service members, veterans, and their immediate families travel for medical, counseling and diverse rehabilitation services through its Air Compassion for Veterans program. The AA Veterans Initiatives program has supported Mercy Medical Airlift's Air Compassion for Veterans program since the beginning of the year by helping to arrange travel on American and American Eagle. The initiative is being expanded through a partnership with American's Fuel Smart program, an employee-driven fuel conservation effort.

Point Man International Ministries

Point Man International Ministries (http://www.pmim.org/) is a service organization with an evangelical purpose that keeps Jesus Christ as its focal point. PMIM acts as a referral service to connect hurting veterans and their families to their Outpost and Home Front system for continued support and fellowship. These support groups are available at no charge, and utilize the gospel of Jesus Christ and Biblical principles to facilitate healing and restoration. The local DFW Outpost and Home Front operates out of Gateway Church in Southlake and meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesday at 7pm of each month. American is transporting two special groups of World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., so they can be recognized for their service. On March 10, American partnered with HBO and The Honor Flight Network to bring 250 WWII veterans who served in the Pacific for a visit to the World War II Memorial. The group will travel on AA's "Flagship Liberty." The special charter begins in Chicago and make stops to pick up veterans in Cleveland, New York and Boston.

AA is also flying 382 former Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), the first women in history trained to fly American military aircraft, from around the country to Washington, D.C., where they will receive the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor from President Obama.

This story is about PVT Channing Moss, who was impaled by a live RPG during a Taliban ambush while on patrol. Army protocol says that medivac choppers are never to carry anyone with a live round in him.

Even though they feared it could explode, the flight crew said damn the protocol and flew him to the nearest aid station. Again, protocol said that in such a case the patient is to be put in sandbagged area away from the surgical unit, given a shot of morphine and left to wait (and die) until others are treated. Again, the medical team ignored the protocol. Here's a seven-minute video put together by the Military Times, which includes actual footage of the surgery where Dr. John Oh, a Korean immigrant who became a naturalized citizen and went to West Point, removed the live round with the help of volunteers and a member of the EOD (explosive ordinance disposal) team.

Tulsa Air and Space Museum’s Air and Rocket Racing Air Show is coming to town with outstanding performers and airplanes! American Airlines is a sponsor. Tulsa has not had an air show in years so this is a big event benefitting the Tulsa Air and Space Museum and the Space Shuttle acquisition.

Go to the website to see all the outstanding performers such as a comedy act in a J-3 Cub that will make your cringe at what this young man can do. Two Tulsa AA employees will do aerobatics: Randy Harris in his gorgeous biplane and Paul Jennnings in his glider. Yes, gliders do aerobatics. WWII airplanes, military routines, wing walkers and much much more will be defying gravity. NASA astronauts will also be in attendance The Rocket Racers will definitely get the kids interest.

We need your support on 3/8/2010 to meet WWII heroes, inbound to DFW, outbound to DCA, to receive the Gold Medal, the highest civil service award, from Congress. Pelosi, Reid, Boehner, McConnell to Hold Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony to Honor the Women Airforce Service Pilots of WWII

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Republican Leader John Boehner, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, and Members of Congress will hold a Congressional Gold Medal ceremony on March 10, 2010 in the Capitol to honor the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) of World War II.

The WASP was a pioneering organization of civilian female pilots employed to fly military aircrafts under the direction of the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. More than 60 years ago, they flew fighter, bomber, transport, and training aircraft in defense of America’s freedom. Through their actions, the WASP eventually were the catalyst for revolutionary reform in the integration of women pilots into the Armed Services.

Legislation to support the WASP Congressional Gold Medal was co-sponsored by: Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), and Representative Susan Davis (D-CA). On July 1, 2009, President Obama signed this legislation.

“This Congressional Gold Medal honors the remarkable accomplishments, courage, and sacrifice of a distinct group of women in the United States military,” said Congresswomen Ros-Lehtinen and Davis, and Senators Hutchison and Mikulski. “The Women Airforce Service Pilots of WWII will be remembered for their dedicated efforts and unwavering service to our country in the fight for freedom.”

VMERG's part of this project is to meet our inbound WASPs,(women's airforce service pilots) who will most likely be in their service uniforms, and escort them to our "Canteen." At the appropriate time, we will then escort them to their departure gate, to Washington DC, (most of them will be flying into DCA- in groups, throughout the day). We have secured the Yandry Centry on the 8th, from 0900-1800. We will decorate it with a 1940's and WWII theme. We are serving refreshments and cake. What need your support with decorating, escorting and, finally, a procession at their departure gate. We would love to have a very strong turn out in supporting our first military qualified pilots, and WWII honorees!

Details: Please wear your regulation AA/AE uniform. If you don't have a uniform, please wear business casual with your AA ID, (there will be photographers and photo ops). Shift work and time of availability is at your discretion throughout the 0900-1800 time frame. We will meet our first arrivals, escort them to the "Canteen,"(yandry center) for a reception in their honor and also an opportunity to meet these amazing pilots, then escort them to their departure gate. They will be leaving in groups, as revenue passengers, NOT charters, to their departure gate headed to DCA. Please keep in mind, they are revenue customers and will be traveling with their family members as well. Most of the ladies are very active and are also active with their local veteran organizations. Some, are traveling with wheelchairs, or have will be needing some special assistance. Some family members will be traveling without their heroine as they are attending the ceremony to receive this award posthumously on behalf of their honoree. Nonetheless, we will be there to honor and support them! We have invited local ROTC groups to assist with the escort. Being a weekday, we do not yet have an idea of the number of ROTC volunteers that will join us. We may have to go directly from the inbound to the outbound, in some cases. However, at the DCA departure gate, we hope to have a parade procession lined up at the gate, to applaud and celebrate this very important occasion.

So, as a wrap, we need volunteers to work as decorators, meeter and greeter escorts, greeters at the canteen and then at our parade line at the departure gate for DCA. Whatever you can support, we appreciate. This is our first group task for 2010 and we really would appreciate a strong turn out! This is a once in a lifetime event and a great opportunity to meet some of those who contributed to WWII's victory and history's very first military trained pilots.

If you can attend, please bring your US Flags!!!! This is a very patriotic event!

About Staff Sergeant Craft

Army Staff Sergeant Maurice Craft was serving in Iraq with the 82nd Airborne when he suffered severe injuries as a result of an explosion in November 2003. An IED was activated by a car alarm in close proximity to SSG Craft, severing his left leg above the knee and causing multiple injuries to his right leg. Unable to be airlifted from the blast zone due to the ensuing battle, SSG Craft was evacuated by HUMVEE to the nearest field hospital where they worked feverishly to save his life.

With injuries so extensive, Maurice’s left leg required immediate amputation, his prognosis grim. After being airlifted to Walter Reed, SSG Craft spent two years in Washington, DC furthering the rehabilitation of his right leg which has required extensive corrective surgeries, and learning to walk with his prosthetic.

A single father raising two young daughters, SSG Craft enjoys reading, playing musical instruments, writing, and playing with his children. He hopes to volunteer and someday work in orthotics and prosthetics; assisting others who may find themselves in situations similar to his own.

That's why Operation Homefront created the Military Child Award -- to recognize and reward military children who set a positive example for the rest of us. Nominations open in February on our online community, Homefront Online. The winner receives $5,000 and is flown to Washington, D.C. for a special ceremony in his or her honor.

Landing On Target!

Inclusion.

It is what an Employee Resource Group (ERG) is all about. When an ERG can step outside of its box and include other people and other ERGs, it exhibits what we all strive for….diversity and inclusion in all that we do.

On 27 JAN, VMERG was able to collaborate with the Abilities Resource Group to bring to HDQ1 an exciting and uplifting event where SFC Dana Bowman (ret) was the keynote speaker. I think it is safe to say that about 200 people showed up to hear SFC Bowman speak.

If you have ever had the chance to hear SFC Bowman speak, you know that we had an amazing motivational presentation.

SFC Bowman is a double leg amputee and accomplished adventurer. He continues to sky dive, scuba dive, hunt, run….the list is endless and truly uplifting. His story continues to bring tears to my eyes and uplift me in ways that I continue to cherish.

As I was listening to his presentation one thing stood out for me personally…..

“It is never too late to pursue or accomplish those things that you are afraid of.”

That statement could not be more true.

Pause….sip coffee….contemplate….continue.

What are you afraid of? What have you put off accomplishing?

Speaking from experience I can say that one of the things I continually put off was the completion of my Ph.D. I sat around for years saying that “coulda woulda” thing without really taking action to complete anything!

What was really going on was the fear that I would not be able to complete the requirements of obtaining my Ph.D. because of my age and the fact that I had been out of school for so long. Going on, umm, 40ish, I put it off and put if off until one day I came to realize that it didn’t matter how old I was. I have always been driven and determined and I wasn’t going to let age get the best of me.

Anywhoo….

Listening to SFC Bowman speak reminded me that I should always “land on target.” No matter how, where or when, or what may try to stop me, I will always…

Jaycees Christmas Parade

The Veteran Military Employee Resource Group (VMERG) participated in the Jaycees Cary Christmas Parade on December 12. A group of 15 volunteers helped decorate a float adorned with an American Eagle RJ and an American Airlines jetliner that were surrounded by wrapped presents. Attached to the float were signs reminding those along the parade route that during this joyous season to take time to remember those fighting for our freedom.

Our volunteers, some dressed in holiday costumes, walked along side the float passing out lollipops with cards reminding folks of our message and our blog. Despite the cold temperature, all enjoyed the event and we were especially proud to hear the crowds cheering, "We love American Airlines!". We challenged attendees on each side of the street to see which side could cheer the loudest in support of the troops. We look forward to next year's parade and your continued support for VMERG.

A little boy, Trace, traveled inbound early December and when he and his Mom landed, they approached Tony Sanchez, FLL CSM, and gave him a note that had a picture and a message from Trace. The message stated that Trace loved American Airlines and one day wanted to be a pilot for us. Trace is only 5 years old!!! Along with that message he gave us 5 McDonalds $5.00 gift cards. He wanted Tony to have one and give the other to soldiers traveling via FLL. We quickly got to work and began granting his wish and we took pictures of every soldier who received one of Trace’s gift cards.

On December 16th, Trace received a keepsake from us showing him what his kind thoughts had brought to FLL. He was met by the BSO office and given a ride on the scooter to the gate as his Mom, an Executive Platinum, watched in tears. An announcement was made at the boarding gate introducing Trace as one of AA's future pilots. Tony presented Trace with an AA lunchbox. Last but not least, we saluted him good-bye as he watched from the window. After the flight departed, we understand Trace and his Mom upon checking in at the counter gave another 5 McDonald gift cards to give to more soldiers. This truly was an amazing story for the FLL TEAAM.

Our message to Trace: The employees of American Airlines at Fort Lauderdale wanted to follow up on your Holiday Wishes. Your request to pass along the McDonalds gift certificate to soldiers flying out of our city brought us great joy during this holiday season. We have taken some pictures for you to save as a keepsake of your well thought kindness.

Trace you will definitely make an amazing Captain one day!!! We wish you a very special Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Holiday Giving Tulsa Style

Members and friends of the Tulsa VMERG Chapter after packing the last of 135 Christmas boxes for troops stationed in Iraq. The packing process was completed over two Saturday’s. Dorthy Talley and Gin McGlothlin organized the project again this year. “We had so many wonderful donations and volunteers hand writing labels, customs forms and of course we couldn’t even get them there without Centrilift.” Centrilift, oil service company located in Claremore, OK, has provided airlift for the boxes for several years now.

The group also collected books, magazines, games, toys, CD’s, DVD’s and toiletries to send to Landstuhl Army Base, Germany for hospitalized troops and their families.

Many packets of coupons have been sent to a Navy base in Japan.

This year the chapter assisted Pete Myers, AA mechanic, in collecting and distributing much needed items at two northeast Oklahoma Veterans’ Homes. Pete said, “It’s really sad. Some of those folks who live there haven’t had visitors in months! So, when we take them their gifts, we sit and visit with them awhile.”

Honoring Veteran's Day 2009 in North Carolina

It is amazing how a simple thought can transpire into a magical week when you combine the imaginations of individuals with a passion to honor our military men and women. The festivities of Veteran’s Day Week 2009 all began with reading an email forwarded to me by Pat Miraglia, HR. The email described how a Delta Flight Attendant offers her customers the opportunity to send warm sentiments to deployed military heroes by bringing journals aboard her flights and asking customers to write in them. What a simple and thoughtful way to send greetings from home.

That email prompted a week long post card drive at RDU. The week began with a kick off ceremony in the American and American Eagle gate area with words from Daniel Mitchell, AA General Manager, and singing of the National Anthem by Janice Fletcher, SERO employee. Customers all throughout the terminal stood still with their hands over their hearts as our National Anthem was sung. Between our employees and customers 1,000 postcards were signed to be sent to our deployed troops.

The SERO celebrated Veteran’s Day with a membership drive and bake sale fundraiser. Six hundred and fifty dollars was raised to support local VMERG events. Employees signed approximately 100 post cards along with journals which will also be sent to deployed troops.

A tribute to the fallen soldiers of Ft Hood was created at a nearby table by Mark Montrose. On the table were name plaques of each fallen soldier accompanied by a single yellow rose. Employees stopped by the table and had a moment of silence to show their respect for our nation’s fallen heroes.

A big “Thank You” goes out to the many work groups including Reservations, Sales, Admiral’s Club, Flight Service, Gate, Ticket Counter, Management, Administrative and both American and American Eagle employees who help make this Veteran’s Day week special. This is the time of year when emails circulate asking folks to send Christmas and holiday cards to 'Any Wounded Soldier' at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.....which, sad to say, you CANNOT do, due to security considerations. However, there IS still a way to get those cards to recovering soldiers at Walter Reed, and elsewhere.........

The American Red Cross again will sponsor a national “Holiday Mail for Heroes” campaign to receive and distribute holiday cards to service members, veterans and their families in the United States and abroad. The card campaign includes those working and receiving care at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

The American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes Inc., will partner for the third year to provide screening of all mail sent to the following P.O. Box address:

Cards should be postmarked no later than Dec. 7 to reach servicemembers recovering at Walter Reed.

People shouldn’t send cards to Walter Reed unless they are addressed to a specific wounded warrior.
Due to security restrictions, Walter Reed cannot accept generic mail addressed to “A Recovering Soldier” or “Any Soldier.” In past years, hundreds of cards were returned to senders and more recently thrown away because of generic addresses, many sent in response to misleading e-mails. Please pass this along to anyone you think might wish to send cards to recovering wounded troops.

Below is a letter from Kevin Barker, builder of Snowball Express wagon for the children. This is a joint effort by the TWU ATD Veterans Committee and VMERG. Anyone who can help with this project will be appreciated.

Thank you and all the VMERG & TWU Locals for their help and support of the Snowball Express wagon. The smile on the faces of these children will return your contribution tenfold. Your VMERG & TWU logo will be carved in the panels on the wagon and will be recognized wherever it is displayed. Your employees/members will be able to see the wagon in the Walk of Gratitude for Snowball Families, Cotton Bowl Parade, Two Ft. worth Stock Show Rodeos plus the Parade, Macy's Parade next year, Cheyenne Frontier Days and possibly in the Dallas Cowboy Half time program on Dec. 13, 2009. These are just a few of the venues we have lined up and we haven't even started soliciting others yet. We plan to use this wagon year round to bring awareness of the Children that have given such a huge sacrifice to our nation. Tribute to the Troops-Wounded Warriors Charter Flight

American Airlines is partnering with the Blue Man Group, Sands Foundation and ThanksUSA to host wounded warriors and their spouses from around the country for a special weekend in Las Vegas. American is chartering one of its yellow-ribbon aircraft to bring this special group to Las Vegas to thank them for their sacrifice and service to our country. The American Airlines “Yellow Ribbon Express” will have a send-off reception and take off from Washington, D.C. (DCA), travel to San Antonio (SAT) for a welcome reception and pick up more heroes, and then arrive at Las Vegas (LAS) to another welcome reception and enjoy a weekend of relaxation and educational seminars sponsored by the Sands Foundation and The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino. On Thursday, a special Blue Man Group performance at 7 p.m. will honor America’s heroes, with all proceeds from ticket sales supporting ThanksUSA’s program to provide scholarships for the spouses and children of military men and women.

Operation Homefront of North Carolina (OHNC) welcomed Chip Finley, Vice President of North State Financial Services in Raleigh, NC, as a board member in August of 2009.

He has quickly gotten involved and is currently training for the upcoming 2009 Marine Marathon in Washington DC this October 25. Chip will be running to benefit Operation Homefront and is hoping to raise $2,620, which would equal $100 per mile.

Chip served in the Navy for 13 years (8 years active and 5 reserve) and has been enlisted in the North Carolina National Guard for 18 months.

Dear Colleague,

I was thinking the other day about a posting I read on a Jetnet blog. The perception of this co-worker was that Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) divide colleagues and focus on differences rather than bring people together and celebrate their similarities.

My first reaction was surprise because I know our ERG's passion for inclusion and respect.

At the same time, it occurred to me that others might feel the same way as the blogger. So I appreciate the opportunity this created for a frank conversation about ERGs. Thank you.

First, let me begin my telling you that anyone is welcome and encouraged to join any ERG. An interest in making a difference is the only prerequisite to join an ERG -- not the color of your skin, your sexual orientation, age, or where or how you worship.

Test Your Knowledge Now!There are straight allies, like the married mother of two grown children who belongs to the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender (GLEAM) ERG because her son is gay; white employees who are members of the African American ERG because their nephew or niece is black. And, there is the Indian mom, who finds support and fellowship from ERG members in several groups, and belongs to Parents at Work and the Indian ERG.

What these employees have in common is the desire to get involved and work together to better our company, our work lives and our communities. They are eager to learn more about their co-workers' cultures or they have an interest in the challenges and opportunities that may be unique to a particular group or groups.

ERG members believe that everyone can and does make a difference at AMR. I urge you to get involved -- join an ERG -- any ERG. Whatever you do, create conversations with your co-workers. When you do, you may find that our similarities are more evident than our differences.

Letters Home - A Military Appreciation Theater Performance

The initial production last winter was critically acclaimed and was nominated for a Joseph Jefferson Award for “Outstanding New Play.”

Soldiers Angels July 2009 Bake Sale Results

Last week’s Soldiers Angels bake sale was the effort of more than 30 bakers and helpers. We managed to raise just over ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS to benefit the patients at the Dallas VA hospital. Wow! This was such a great turnout!

I entered my hours of preparation as an independent activity in the American Volunteers site on the Employee Programs page of Jetnet. I called the event “Soldiers Angels Bake Sale.” There is an option to choose veterans/military under type of activity. If everyone would log their hours volunteered to support our military, the combined results could make for some great talking points for Captains Palmersheim and Blankenship, who are responsible for our Veterans Initiatives within American Airlines Corporate Communications. I would encourage everyone who participated to do so – it took a lot of small efforts to make this great effort come together and we want that to be appropriately represented.

Special thanks to the everyone who volunteered their time and energy towards making this effort happen!!! Thanks as well to the CERG and EWD for partnering with us in this effort to support our veterans!

Friday evening, July 17, 2009, the SERO VMERG held a Military Family Appreciation Movie Night. We welcomed 15 military family members into C31/32 with big smiles and to the aroma of freshly popped popcorn. The evening began with pizza, popcorn, drinks and fellowship. There was an activity table for the children to color/draw on before and during the movie.

After dinner, everyone gathered around for the main attraction. The adults relaxed on couches and comfy chairs while the children stretched out on body pillows provided by Michelle Walter. Vice Chair, Carolyn Barczik, aka Movie Theatre Attendant, provided us with an entertaining safety briefing. Immediately following the briefing, we watched the movie “Beverly Hills Chihuahua.”

As our guests were leaving, the adults were presented with a family photograph which was taken in front of the 777 in the lobby and each child was presented with an amenities kit filled with snacks and goodies.

This evening wouldn’t have been possible without the help of everyone involved. A big thank you goes out to Troy Wreggelsworth for helping to create a wide screen movie theatre atmosphere with the sight and sounds, Wade Oakes for the ice, Kathy Slotter and Stephanie Nicholson for helping greet our families and to Operations for offering to give directions and greet our guests. I would also like to thank Mark and Nicholas Montrose, Joel Adams, Wayne Moorefield, Stacey Kerch, Judy and Eric Lundberg, Bruce Chase, Michelle Walter, Sharon and Ed Ryder, Carolyn Barczik, Krista Leap, Patricia Seelbach, Joe Fish and Patsy Shepherd for helping set up, entertain and clean up!

Judy Lundberg and her husband Eric coordinated Operation Ballentine. Seven houses in their neighborhood where able to fill 8 boxes and ship them off to Afghanistan on Jun 16, 2009. Judy states, "It was a success and next time I am sure there will be more that want to participate."

American Airlines and Its Employees Increase Commitment to Veterans and Military Personnel

Employees Announce Launch of Veteran Military Employee Resource Group
FORT WORTH, Texas, June 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- American Airlines, American Eagle and their employees are demonstrating an increased commitment to veterans and members of the military through the formation of a Veteran Military Employee Resource Group (VMERG) and increased support at the corporate level.

The VMERG, the first of its type in the U.S. airline industry, is a group of employees whose purpose is to promote the roles and contributions of veterans and active-duty military employees and to serve as a liaison between American Airlines and the veteran and military communities. The VMERG currently has chapters in Cary, N.C., Chicago and at American's headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas.

"We are very excited to have the opportunity to unite the volunteer efforts already given by so many American employees," said Susan "Sam" Seelbach, VMERG President. "Our employees are very passionate about providing support to the men and women, both active duty and veterans, who bear our nation's colors and protect our freedoms."

Seelbach noted that while employees have volunteered for many years, the corporate infrastructure and support gained from organizing into an employee resource group will further increase the group's impact. In addition to its long history of employee volunteerism for veterans and the military, American has long supported these brave men and women at a corporate level through a variety of initiatives, ranging from special travel benefits to events for wounded veterans and programs for the families of fallen heroes.

American provides special travel benefits to qualifying active members of the military, including waived baggage fees, discounts on leisure travel, preferred-seating upgrades, and complimentary Admirals Club admission. An estimated 10,000 active military service members were guests at American's Admirals Clubs last year.

"I am proud to be a part of a company that so consistently and clearly demonstrates a commitment to our military," said Capt. Steve Blankenship, Director - Veterans Initiatives at American, noting that more than 60 percent of pilots and approximately 10 percent of all American Airlines employees are active military service members or veterans.
In May alone, American, American Eagle and employee volunteers supported programs including:

Wounded Warrior Rodeo Roundup -- As the official airline of the Wounded Warrior Rodeo Roundup on May 29, American assisted with transportation for nearly 400 soldiers and family members from Killeen's Fort Hood, San Antonio's Brooke Army Medical Center and Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C., to Milano, Texas, for a fun-filled weekend complete with a private rodeo, live concert and bass fishing tournament. Vietnam veteran and actor Dale Dye, known for his roles in Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan, served as master of ceremonies.

Operation Iraqi Children "Thank-you" Event -- On May 28, American Airlines volunteers delivered thank-you letters to Grapevine Elementary School students from the Iraqi children who benefited from Operation Iraqi Children (OIC). In April, American and OIC partnered to transport more than 20 tons of cargo, including Crocs® shoes and school supplies, as well as letters from the Grapevine fifth-graders, for U.S. troops to deliver to Iraqi children. National Memorial Day Concert and Parade -- American was a sponsor of the national Memorial Day Concert, which aired nationwide on Sunday evening, May 24, on PBS. American also was the official airline of the nation's largest Memorial Day parade, in Washington, D.C., which attracted an estimated crowd of 300,000 and also aired on the Pentagon cable channel. American was represented in the parade by employees from its VMERG, the wife and children of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Michael Elledge, who was killed in Iraq in 2008. The Elledges - Carleen, Caleb and Cassidy - have participated in Snowball Express, an organization that brings together and provides special programs for the families of fallen military heroes.

Race for Heroes -- On May 16, American sponsored the Race for Heroes at the Ballpark in Arlington, Texas. Nearly 1,500 participants joined 5K and 10K races to honor and pay tribute to the men and women who serve our country, with all proceeds benefiting Snowball Express. Special guests included retired Col. Ken Cordier, a Vietnam veteran who was a prisoner of war for more than six years.

Marine Fleet Week -- The United States Marine Corps launched its inaugural Marine Fleet Week in Chicago, May 11-17, as the city welcomed nearly 2,000 Marines. American's VMERG, led by Chicago Chapter Chairwoman Linda Kozma, hosted the first-ever celebration at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport to recognize the contributions of the Marines. The event included a gate dedication ceremony and a chronological "History of the Marines" museum exhibit on display at Gate K3 May 11-14. A special guest at the celebration was Brig. Gen. Melvin G. Spiese.
In addition to these events, VMERG is spearheading plans for a North Carolina Heroes Gala Aug. 29 in Raleigh-Durham to benefit area service men and women. Plans are also under way for the seventh annual Sky Ball at Alliance Airport, scheduled for Oct. 24 in Fort Worth.

FAMILY FUN NIGHT !!!

The SERO will be hosting a great night of fun for the families of local deployed NC National Guardsmen on Friday 17th of July. We will be showing a movie (fun activities for those who can't sit still to watch a movie) and playing a couple of games with a chance to win fantastic AA stuff.

The menu will be pizza, popcorn and cookies.

We will gather in the North Wing between 1830 and 2100.

Let's show these families that the employees at the SERO are proud of what their families have sacrificed for our freedom.

Beach Blanket Bingo

The SERO VMERG Chapter's first off site event was held in Fayetteville at the North Carolina State Veterans Home on Saturday, May 30th. Members hosted a Beach Blanket Bingo Party for approximately 25 residents which included beach music, bingo, appetizers and our own Carolyn Barczik dressed in a vintage bathing suit.

The back of the hall was decorated with beach towels, a palm tree and a beach umbrella to enhance the beach theme. Bruce Chase called 5 bingo games and kept everyone entertained. The winners of each game were presented with a gift bag full of goodies and a framed photo, printing by Wayne Moorefield, of them accepting their prize from our bathing suit beauty. Quarters collected during our April Hotdog/Bake Sale were distributed to the residents attending as each player received a money pouch containing $2.00 in quarters and book mark.

Once bingo was complete, volunteers served nutritious appetizers, deliciously created by Mark Montrose, to the residents and mingled while beach music played in the background. Nursing home staff members joined in the festivities and all were pleased with the event. The residents were extremely grateful, departed the event with smiles on their faces and made comments asking when we were planning on returning. With that said, we have begun planning a Harvest Moon event this fall!

Chicago Marine Week

Linda Kozma, Chicago Chapter Chair, ensured the Marines felt welcome arriving in Chicago by dedicating gate K3 to them during Marine Week. Festivities kicked off on Monday, May 11, with a Marine Honor Guard presenting the colors and the 29 Palms band playing the National Anthem.

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,

I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.

150 soldiers from Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio got a break from therapy, for a special Mavericks treat in Dallas. American Airlines donated a chartered flight and employees volunteered their time, while Mavericks season ticketholders donated tickets to the soldiers for a fun-filled night at the American Airlines Center. Many people came together to give these men and women a special night, and to let the soldiers know what they have done for the country will not soon be forgotten.

Thanksgiving Thoughts from a Deployed Hero

"Well, let me start with Happy Thanksgiving.

As has been the routine of my last couple of years... I found myself today eating an MRE for Thanksgiving dinner in between planning for missions. When I was a PFC, before my first tour, I was in California, training in the dead of winter in a high desert for Iraq in OIF 4. It was a chicken and salsa MRE. cold. Then, I actually did get a thanksgiving the following year. I came home in mid October and remember my mom tearing at the dinner table because she was thankful, as well as I, that I had made it home alive. Then, the following yearI was on a boat, and I don’t think that I was able to call or email home for about 60 days because we were running missions in Somalia and Bangladesh. Now here I am. Today I had a lasagna MRE for dinner as I sat in the office alone, letting my guys get some rest before the mission and I was getting the logistics together. My thoughts always drift home. Pumpkin beer, cold winters, fires in the fire place, football, stuffing my face until I can't sit up, family, being in a safe place where I don’t have to be on guard, or worry about if my other marines are ok... are we, ok?

My mother wrote me an email saying that she feels like her emails are boring in comparison to mylife, and doesn’t know what to say.... so she writes of home and the things I described. But what she doesn’t realize is that all those things bring me closer to home. Even an email with one sentence in it saying hello, tells me I am not forgotten and left in this dark worldthat has been the last 4 years of my life. So this thanksgiving I am thankful for that. Thankful that someone out there cares about me enough to remind me of what I love about home and that if I can just keep pushing, I can make it home and experience these things again, without the weight of the world on my shoulders.

VMERG officially launched at the SERO on November 13th, 2008. The event began with singing the national anthem and continued with introductions, a poem written by a wounded hero, singing Proud to be an American and ended with words of a veteran. There was an informational table open all day and apple pie and ice cream was served.
